The Ecomuseum of La Javie: An Authentic Journey into the Heart of Haute-Provence
Just minutes away from Camping Les Eaux Chaudes, nestled in a natural haven at the gateway to Digne-les-Bains, lies a little-known yet fascinating heritage treasure: the Ecomuseum of La Javie. This unique museum is an invitation to step back in time and discover life in the Bléone and Bès valleys as it once was. Perfect for a family cultural outing or an inspiring stop during your stay in our region.
A museum like no other
Housed in the former presbytery of the village of La Javie, the ecomuseum has been passionately run since 1998 by the local association La Javie Autrefois. Here, there are no impersonal showcases or cold audio guides: every object and every corner tells a story. The villagers themselves donated furniture, tools, clothing, documents... creating a living museum that reflects their community.
The ecomuseum recreates life around 1900 through eight themed rooms: a classroom, a family kitchen, a cobbler’s workshop, a period grocery store, a room dedicated to transhumance, and even an outdoor space with old farming tools. A special room also honors the Poilus (WWI soldiers) from La Javie who went to war in 1914–1918. The visit feels like walking through a family home, often guided by passionate volunteer members who are generous with stories and insights.
💡 Good to know: Entry is free, but visits are by appointment only. Contact Roger at 06 16 07 36 91 or Monique at moniquemussard5@gmail.com.

More than a museum: a village in celebration
Your visit can easily continue with a walk through the village. As you follow the grey stone alleys, you’ll discover the Notre-Dame Chapel perched on a promontory, or the communal washhouse—nicknamed “la bugade”—featuring an exhibition on traditional laundry practices.
La Javie is also lively year-round with traditional events supported by the ecomuseum: the Foire aux Tardons (sheep fair), the feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, or the famous Foire de la Poire Sarteau, celebrating this iconic local pear. These are perfect opportunities to connect with locals and experience true Provençal authenticity.
An ideal stop in the UNESCO Haute-Provence Geopark
The Ecomuseum of La Javie is an active partner of the Haute-Provence Geopark, recognized by UNESCO for the region’s geological and cultural richness. Visiting the museum offers a deeper understanding of the strong bond between people, the land, and the mountains of this rugged yet generous area.
🌿 The geological trail of Vieil Esclangon, the Barles gorges, or nearby dinosaur tracks are just a few of the excursions to enjoy from the campsite.
